Geometry

For the next while, our focus in math will be exploring area, directions, and symmetry. Students will see how they can cover objects to compare the areas, and will think about how geometry is part of the world around them. They will create pictures to see how everyday objects can be described by their shapes, and discuss the shapes they see in their environment using positional vocabulary (for example, the square is below the triangle). Later, students will use transparent mirrors as they observe and create symmetrical shapes and designs.

Number Sense and Numeration

For the next while, our focus in math will be addition and subtraction. Students will explore many different situations where a quantity is being added to or removed from a group. Students will act out addition stories where they join one quantity to another. This helps them understand that when we add numbers of objects, we increase the size of a set. They will act out subtraction stories where they separate a set, or take a quantity away from it. This helps them understand that when we subtract from a group of objects, we decrease the size of a set. We use words, numerals, and the signs ( +) and (-) to talk about adding and subtracting.
